Discover Benin: Tourist Attractions and Sites to See

Updated: 2 days ago

The Benin Bronzes said to have been created between the 13th and 16th centuries, continue to captivate the world, sparking conversations hundreds of years after their creation. These masterpieces are not just historical treasures; they are living symbols of Benin's cultural heritage.

Known for their vibrant culture, the people of Benin City cherish their heritage, and the historical significance that sets them apart. That’s why I want to take you on an exciting journey from ancient kingdoms to the vibrant streets of Benin City.

This journey will allow you to experience the heartbeat of a city where the past and present exist in perfect harmony.

From its past shaped by ancient kingdoms to vibrant streets defined by its present, let us start this experience, guess what city I am writing from?

Tourist Attractions and Sites to See in Benin

Benin City located in Edo state, Nigeria has a lot of places that one should see in this lifetime, the first stop on this journey from ancient kingdoms to vibrant streets is

The Oba's Palace

As someone who appreciates African traditions and Nigerian culture, I have done a lot of reseach and listened to stories about the Oba's palace. Still, nothing could have prepared me for the incredible experience of being there.

When I first stepped into the Oba of Benin Palace, it felt like I was transported back in time

It was an experience that truly brought the palace’s structured, hierarchical society to life, the chiefs, collectively known as the Oba's Cabinet, play a vital role in the daily governance of the kingdom, and witnessing their presence gave me a glimpse into the deep-rooted African traditions that still thrive in Benin.

Visiting the Oba's palace allows you to immerse yourself in its rich history and take photos. You can see the famous Benin Bronzes up close, and depending on the season or ongoing events, you might even witness a vibrant cultural display, including traditional dances and cultural rites. And don't forget to savour the delicious local delicacies! These are just a few highlights that can make your visit unforgettable.

And if you are lucky, you might even hear untold stories about the ancient Benin Kingdom and Edo state from the locals themselves.

It is important to be mindful of certain things when visiting, for example wearing black clothes, are considered a taboo in the palace. Respecting these cultural practices is essential for fully appreciating the palace experience

For a comprehensive guide on palace etiquette and attractions, please visit Things to know when visiting the Oba's palace

The palace is not just a stunning architectural wonder; it is the heartbeat of the Benin Kingdom, filled with centuries of stories that have shaped its people. It’s one thing to learn about the palace from a distance but to walk its grounds is to truly understand why the people of Benin hold their heritage so dear. It’s a feeling that stays with you long after you leave.

Igun street

Still on the journey from ancient kingdoms to vibrant modernity, let us pause for a visit to Igun Street, a less than 30-minute trip from the Oba’s Palace.

This historic street is one of Benin City's most cherished tourist destinations and a true feast for the eyes. Igun Street is known for its bronze statues and sculptures that line its pathways, each telling the story of Benin's rich heritage.

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the street is home to the guild of bronze casters, an ancient craft passed down through generations. Unlike other trades where apprenticeships are common, this remarkable skill is carefully preserved within families. The tradition is passed exclusively from father to son, ensuring the secrets of the craft remain within their lineage.

Walking down Igun Street feels like stepping into a living museum. The sculptures vividly capture scenes from Benin's history, including its traditional architecture and religious ceremonies, serving as a tangible link to the city’s cultural past.

Benin Moat

Enjoying this ride with me from ancient kingdoms to vibrant streets? Now, let’s take another pause at the historic Benin Moat, and here’s why it’s worth your time.

The Benin Moat or Walls of Benin, is a series of massive earthworks surrounding Benin City. These impressive structures date back to around 800 AD, long before the establishment of the Oba monarchy.

The Benin Moat's role as a defensive structure is equally fascinating. Its steep banks and berms were designed to protect the city from invaders, while nine strategically placed gates controlled access.

It's hard not to marvel at how such an incredible feat was achieved through manual labour, using earth from the inner ditch to build the outer walls.

Walking around the moat today, you can feel the weight of history surrounding you, more than just an old wall, it’s a symbol of the power and cleverness of the ancient Benin Kingdom

Culinary Experiences

What’s a journey from ancient kingdoms to vibrant streets without food? Trust me, there’s no calorie counting on this trip! We still have quite the adventure ahead and I hope you are feeling the rich history and vibrancy of Benin City along the way.

This is topping the list, a fiery and flavorful dish that will leave your taste buds tingling. This hearty meal typically consists of rice cooked in a spicy tomato-based sauce, often with added vegetables and protein. The heat from the peppers is balanced with the savoury flavours of the sauce.

For a quick and satisfying snack, suya is a popular choice. This grilled meat dish is typically made with skewered beef, chicken, or fish, marinated in a spicy blend of spices and grilled to perfection. The smoky flavour and tender meat make suya a delicious and addictive snack.

I have named it the "Akara of Benin Cultural Heritage" because it’s not just any bean cake; it’s a deep-fried masterpiece that’s crispy on the outside and wonderfully soft on the inside.

It’s made with old-fashioned methods been passed down through generations, so it’s very authentic. Every bite is a crispy, delicious taste of Benin’s rich food history.

Here’s a little tip: try it with bread, and you might end up so full and satisfied that you’ll want to nap while the rest of us continue our journey from ancient kingdoms to vibrant streets.

Cultural Immersion

I am sure everyone's appetites have been satisfied on this incredible journey from ancient kingdoms to vibrant streets. What comes to mind when you think of Benin's traditional fashion?

Traditional attires speak volumes without uttering a word. It’s the uniqueness for me. Each piece tells a story, reflecting the rich culture and deep-rooted heritage..

In Benin City, traditional clothing isn’t just worn; it’s celebrated, these outfits carry a sense of pride and identity.

Traditional attire in Benin City has gracefully evolved, blending modern touches with deep cultural roots. Men often wear a white tunic topped with a vibrant white fabric, accented by coral beads or a cap, symbolising tradition and prestige. Women showcase their elegance with wrappers made from velvet, lace, or George, paired with a blouse or the iconic beaded cape, Ewu-Ivie. These attires reflect the beauty of Benin’s culture, where old meets new in a captivating blend.

When in Benin City, dress comfortably and respectfully. Pack light, breathable clothes for the warm climate—think loose shirts, trousers, or skirts, and a light jacket for cooler evenings and comfortable shoes.

In Benin City, the native tongue is Bini (Edo), which is a vital part of the local heritage. While Bini is widely spoken, English serves as the main language for business and education. Additionally, Pidgin English is commonly used in casual conversations, adding a vibrant layer to the city’s linguistic landscape. This blend of languages enriches the cultural experience for both locals and visitors.
